Community: Striving to become a prophetic community of mutual service and to make the Gospel alive, the Association invites its members and challenges them to support one another in a continually evolving understanding of the needs of God's people.

Preferential Option for the Poor: In order to promote God's reign of justice and love in our world, members hold a "preferential option for the poor," to which the universal missionary Church has pledged itself.

Open to All: Although the Association is an organization of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States, it is open to persons beyond those borders, both geographically and confessionally. It also seeks to foster a broader ecumenism through promotion of inter-religious dialogue and exploration of genuinely new attitudes towards other religious believers.

Spreading the Gospel: Mindful of the rich diversity of gifts and talents among all the members, the Association fosters collaboration with all persons of good will who share its commitment in service to human promotion, justice and peace, in the context of the spread of the Gospel and cross-cultural evangelization.
