What's in a Name?

Dear members and friends,

When we began our monthly e-newsletter we wanted it to have a familiar ring, so we called it the Mission e-Update.  We’ve found that the title it is too familiar to our quarterly Mission Update Magazine and has , at times, lead to some confusion about both periodicals.  So we are changing the title of our e-newsletter and we want you to choose it’s new name.  The choice that gets the most votes will be unveiled in June, so be sure to cast your vote before June 1st!  We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours in Mission,

"Instrumentum Laboris: The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith"

"New evangelization, that is, new proclamation
of the message of Jesus, which brings joy
and frees us.": the instrumentum laboris of the Synod

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - "Handing on the Faith" is the title of the third chapter of laboris the XIII General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the theme: "The new evangelization for the transmission of the Christian faith" (7 to 28 October 2012). Here it is evident that the purpose of the new evangelization and the transmission of the faith, and this is not the work of one individual only, but instead is the responsibility of every Christian and the whole Church. It focuses especially on the liturgy and life of prayer, which "transform a Christian community which celebrates and transmits the Trinitarian faith", and on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which develops the fundamental contents of faith and at the same time indicates the pedagogy of its transmission. At the heart of the new evangelization the parish must be placed, point of reference and coordination of pastoral initiatives, and family, the model-place of evangelization.   Click here to read more.

**Lineamenta: "New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith"**

Pray for the success of the upcoming XIII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on  “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”  which will be held on October 7-28, 2012.

The lineamenta calls upon the Church to a process of discernment and  “to have the courage to forge new paths” (#5) to effectively respond to the challenges of mission and evangelization. It encourages “finding new approaches to evangelization so as ‘to be Church’ in today’s ever-changing social and cultural situations’ (#9).

The lineamenta challenges us, “Today, a ‘business as usual’ attitude can no longer be the case” (#10) and calls the on all of us in the Church “to evaluate pastoral practice on the basis of the missionary character of their programmes and activities” (#10).
