Drs. John and Anne Marie Hansen served as lay missionaries in Tanzania, East Africa with the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, 1982-1985. Upon their return, they co-directed the Spiritan Associate overseas mission sending program for 5 years. Anne Marie and John developed a Lay Spiritan Associate community in the US Province, where they continue to serve in leadership roles. Both John & Anne Marie have completed facilitator training in Conversations in the Spirit with USCCB and with Ignatian Encounter Ministry. John represents the Spiritans on the USCMA Board. Currently Anne Marie is in her 6th year of serving as a member of the Provincial Council Leadership Team for the US Province of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit.
In addition to missionary service, John and Anne are both educators. John served as a teacher and administrator for 34 years in Public Education including his last 22 years as High School Principal and Superintendent of Beaver Area School District. After retirement, he served as the Senior Advisor at Tsingua University International School in Beijing, 2017-2020. John’s educational training includes Michigan State University (BS), Central Michigan University (MA) and the University of Pittsburgh (EdD). John also holds certificates in Strategic Planning, Strategic Doing, and Creativity and Change Leadership.
Anne Marie served as assistant professor of Occupational Therapy at Duquesne University for 20 years, including Scholar in Residence for the Center for Spiritan Studies and Scholar in Residence for the Center for African Studies. She continues to collaborate with African occupational therapists to uncover the barriers to social and occupational inclusion persons with disabilities face in Africa and strategies for overcoming these barriers.
Anne Marie’s educational background includes BS in Occupational Therapy, Mount Mary College, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, an MS in Educational Leadership and Adult Education, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and an EdD in Interdisciplinary Doctorate in Educational Leaderships, Duquesne University. She also holds certificates in Qualitative Research, Duquesne University and Strategic Doing.
