Fr. Henry Sands – Black and Indian Mission Office

Fr. Sands reflects on the readings in the context of his work helping local African American and Native American communities spread the Good News and address pressing needs in their urban parishes and on reservations. He belongs to three tribes: Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi.

Fr. Sands belongs to three tribes: Ojibway, Odawa, and Potawatomi and grew up in a First Nations community on Walpole Island in Ottawa. He is a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of the Odawa Indians in Michigan.

Now a priest of the Detroit archdiocese, he leads a “Mission to the Missions” by overseeing grants and activites that empower local Native American and African American communities to grow in their Catholic faith, proclaim the Good News, and address the  needs of their people in urban neighborhoods and on reservations.
